PEPCO'S PITCH TO GAIN CONTROL OF HOME COMFORT

THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE IS STRICTLY THE OPINION OF CARDINAL AIR SERVICES. WE RECOMMEND THAT READERS VISIT Pepco TO FORM AN INDEPENDENT VIEW.

We live in a quickly changing society today and technology is hard to keep up with. One of the emerging concerns of today's society regarding the topic of personal comfort is the evolution of technology in relation to heating and cooling systems. Once only considered in large business buildings it is becoming more common in the residential sector. So, is it a good thing or is it something that should be left alone?

Currently, in Maryland, Pepco is offering a program to its customers  called Energywise. In short, Energywise is a program that involves the installation of home thermostats by Pepco. These thermostats and DCUs communicate via radio signals and will shut down the compressor during periods of high energy demand on the power grid. Should a customer choose to sign up for this program they, in return, will receive savings associated with the program.

We would strongly discourage the acceptance and use of this technology for some very basic reasons.

·       However well meaning this program is we have not seen any solid information as to how long exactly your compressor would be cycled off.   This could leave customers without cooling ability for extended periods of time.

·       It is likely that programs such as these will become less of a choice if a wide base of customers began to opt into similar programs.

.      In the event that this becomes more and more prevalent across the country the possibility that government could gain some authority over the operation of one’s personal home system becomes a concern.

Pepco also makes some claims that are not necessarily correct, such as the following excerpt taken from their site:

"When Energy Wise Rewards conservation periods occur, cool air continues to be circulated throughout your home by the air conditioner fan. The cycling option you choose determines how long your air conditioner compressor will rest during each Energy Wise Rewards conservation period."

The fact is that cool air will not continue to circulate if your system compressor has been shut down. While your fan will continue to circulate air...it is unconditioned b/c the compressor is no longer able to remove the heat from the air crossing the indoor coil.

In summary, we believe that this is one area where control should always be in the "hands" of the consumer. Most Americans will limit the use of their home system simply b/c they are paying the bill. There are too many factors that are not covered in detail regarding this plan. We will see the true response of this plan only when those individuals who have signed up have their air conditioning system turned off when it is 90 degrees outside. The implementing of technologies such as Smartgrid and Energywise is, in the opinion of Cardinal Air Services, not a good use for such technologies b/c as with most things that seem well intentioned it could possibly lead to others issues which limit the freedom of Americans.

**Just an unrelated side note......CO2 greens the earth.......We understand that many blindly follow our governments theory that CO2 is horribly bad and should be reduced to save the planet. For more info visit CO2 is green
